The check engine light comes on and your stomach drops. Is it serious? Can you still drive it?
Most of the time, you can keep driving — but you shouldn't ignore it. The check engine light is your car's way of saying "something is outside normal operating parameters," and the range of causes runs from a simple loose gas cap to a major repair. The only way to know which one you're dealing with is to read the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) and look at what the engine is actually doing.
At MB Motors Service in Bellingham, our technicians diagnose check engine lights every day. Here are the 10 most common causes we see.
The 10 Most Common Check Engine Light Causes
1. Loose or faulty gas cap
The evaporative emissions system is sealed, and a loose cap triggers a leak code. Tighten the cap and drive a few cycles — the light often clears itself.
2. Oxygen (O2) sensor failure
O2 sensors monitor exhaust oxygen to optimize fuel trim. A failed sensor can noticeably hurt your fuel economy.
3. Catalytic converter failure
The cat converts exhaust pollutants. Failure often follows an ignored O2 sensor or misfire. This is the expensive one.
4. Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor
The MAF measures incoming air to calculate fuel delivery. A dirty or failed MAF causes rough idle, hesitation, and poor fuel economy.
5. Spark plugs or ignition coil
Misfires (codes P0300–P030X) usually point to plugs or coils. Common in higher-mileage vehicles.
6. EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve
The EGR reduces NOx emissions by recirculating exhaust. They clog and fail, especially in stop-and-go driving.
7. EVAP system leak
The evaporative emissions system captures fuel vapors. Any leak in the system throws a code — it can be as simple as a cracked hose.
8. Thermostat failure
If your thermostat is stuck open (engine never reaches full temp) or closed (engine overheats), the engine computer will flag it.
9. Knock sensor
The knock sensor detects engine detonation and retards timing to protect the engine. A failed one means your engine is running without that protection.
10. Battery or charging system issue
Modern cars detect when the alternator or battery voltage is out of spec. A failing battery often shows up as a warning before the car won't start.
When Is a Check Engine Light an Emergency?
A steady check engine light means "non-urgent, but investigate soon." A flashing or blinking check engine light is different — it indicates an active misfire that can quickly damage your catalytic converter. Pull over safely, and don't keep driving until it's diagnosed.
Also treat these as urgent:
- Check engine + temperature warning light together
- Check engine + loss of power on acceleration
- Check engine + unusual smell (burning, rotten egg, fuel)
In any of these cases, don't keep driving. Call our service department at (360) 312-4252 and we'll help you decide next steps.
Why You Shouldn't Just Clear the Code and Ignore It
We hear this a lot: "I just had the code cleared at the parts store." That turns off the light, but it doesn't fix the underlying problem. The code will come back — and in the meantime, you might be damaging other components, burning extra fuel, or setting yourself up for a bigger repair bill.
Clearing codes also resets the car's readiness monitors, which can hide a problem from the next technician who looks at it. Leave the code in place until it's properly diagnosed.
MB Motors' Diagnostic Process
Our technicians use professional-grade diagnostic equipment — not a consumer code reader from the parts store. We read live data, not just stored codes, which means we can tell you why a code is present, not just which code is present. That distinction matters when you're trying to avoid replacing parts that don't actually need replacing.
We serve Bellingham and all of Whatcom County, including drivers from Lynden, Blaine, and beyond. MB Motors has been family-owned in Bellingham since 2009, and we'll always give you an honest assessment before any work begins.
