How Carfax Reports Work — And What They Don't Tell You

At MB Motors, every vehicle comes with a free Carfax report. We include it because we think transparency is the right way to do business, and buyers deserve to see a vehicle's history before they commit.

But here's something we always tell customers: a Carfax is a starting point, not a guarantee. Understanding what Carfax reports — and what it misses — is the difference between a smart purchase and a surprise down the road.

What Carfax Actually Reports

Carfax pulls information from a network of data sources: insurance companies, DMV records, auto auctions, police reports, and some service facilities. What reliably shows up: title history (clean, salvage, rebuilt, flood damage), accident and damage records from insurance claims, odometer readings, service records from reporting facilities, and ownership history including number of previous owners and fleet/rental history.

For most buyers, this information is genuinely valuable. A clean Carfax with multiple service records and one owner is a real positive signal.

What Carfax Does NOT Report

Unreported accidents — If an accident was minor and the owner paid out-of-pocket rather than filing an insurance claim, Carfax has no record of it. A vehicle can have had significant repairs and show a completely clean Carfax.

Owner-performed or cash-pay service — Oil changes done at home, repairs by a friend, work at a shop that doesn't report to Carfax — none of this appears.

Pre-2015 rebuilds and title washes — Vehicle history data becomes less reliable the older the vehicle is.

Mechanical condition — Carfax tells you nothing about how the engine sounds, how worn the brakes are, or whether the transmission is about to fail.

Cosmetic work — Paintwork, panel replacements, and body filler don't show up unless an insurance claim was filed.

Using Carfax as Part of Your Research

1. Check the title — Never buy a salvage or rebuilt title without understanding exactly what happened.
2. Count the owners and states — more owners and multiple states increases the research burden.
3. Look at mileage consistency — big gaps might mean mileage was added quickly or the record is incomplete.
4. Cross-reference with the physical inspection — if the Carfax is clean but the car has multiple mismatched panels, something doesn't add up.
