Check the Battery Health First

Battery degradation is the #1 concern with any used EV, and the Model 3 is no exception. Tesla batteries hold up well compared to some competitors, but used examples will have lost some range relative to their original specs.

• Ask the seller to show you the battery percentage at a known state of charge (e.g., charge to 100% and note the projected range).
• Gen 1 (2017–2020) Long Range: EPA-rated 310–325 miles new. Healthy used examples typically show 280–300 miles at 100%.
• A car showing less than 85% of original range is worth scrutinizing — ask for service history and consider having Tesla run a battery diagnostic.

Understand the MCU Version

Model 3 vehicles have gone through hardware transitions that affect features and longevity:

• MCU1 (2017–2018 early production): Older chip. eMMC failure was a known issue — check if it's been replaced.
• MCU2 (2018+ most production): More capable chip, supports more features long-term.

Know Your Autopilot Hardware

• HW2.5: Found in Model 3s produced 2017–2019. Cannot run Full Self-Driving (FSD) on the newer neural net architecture.
• HW3 (FSD Computer): Standard from ~late 2019 onward. Required for FSD Beta/Supervised.
• HW4: Found in vehicles produced 2023+. Most capable.

Inspect the Screen for Yellowing

Early Model 3 center screens are prone to a yellow discoloration around the screen edges, particularly on 2017–2020 production years. It's a delamination issue in the anti-glare coating. Tesla no longer covers this under warranty, but replacement screens are available — budget for it when pricing a 2018-and-older Model 3.
